If you're like most part-time poker players, your life outside of poker is busy.

Jobs, families, responsibilities—your time is limited. Your energy is limited.

You can't always squeeze in long study sessions.

You can't always grind endless volume.

But there’s one thing you can control that makes a massive difference:

Your environment.

Cozy attic room with a worn-out chair facing a desk cluttered with a monitor, snacks, and soda bottles. Stone and wood walls create a rustic feel.

Professional Environment = Professional Results

If you treat poker like something you're doing half-heartedly from the sofa, while Netflix plays in the background and the kids are running around—you'll get half-hearted results.

If you treat it seriously you'll see real progress over time.

Professional setup = professional results. Amateur setup = amateur results.

Simple.

(Unless you're girafganger7, of course, in which case you could play anywhere you like and still crush.)

Common Mistakes That Kill Focus

Most part-time players don't realise how much their environment is hurting their game.

  • Leaving the TV on "for background noise"

  • Playing on your phone while sitting on the couch

  • Trying to squeeze in hands while the kids are still awake (and feeling guilty about it)

  • Constantly getting interrupted by family because you haven’t made it clear: “I'm unavailable for the rest of the evening.”

Even small distractions add up fast.

And in poker, losing focus for just one or two hands can cost you your whole session.

The Minimum Viable Poker Setup

You don’t need a baller $5,000 setup. You just need the basics done right:

  • A laptop with a second monitor (or a PC with two screens)

  • One screen for your tables, one for your lobbies. (Not Discord, not YouTube)

  • A quiet room — office, study, bedroom — where you can close the door and truly focus

  • Headphones or speakers with instrumental music only — no lyrics pulling at your attention

Close to a bathroom for quick breaks. Snacks and drinks prepped before you start.

(And hey, if you have a helpful spouse or partner who can bring you a coffee mid-session, even better.)

This setup isn’t about luxury. It's about creating an environment where you're able to give 100% of your focus to your favourite hobby and craft.

Set Yourself Up for Success

You're busy. Your time is precious.

Respect your time at the tables by setting up a space that helps you win, not one that sets you up to fail.

You don't have to be a full-time pro to take your sessions seriously. You just have to be willing to put a little thought into your environment.

You'll be amazed at the difference it makes.

👉 Professional setup = professional results

👉 Amateur setup = amateur results

Choose wisely.

That's it for this week.

See you next time.

Another gem, I'm very much guilty of letting the fam run rampant around me and parenting while playing.
