OTB #076: Learn to CRUSH Preflop Spots in Just 7 Days

Are you a part-time tournament poker player who wants to learn how to crush a preflop spot in just 10 minutes per day in the next week?

Then this is the piece for you...

Enter The Preflop Dojo—a cutting-edge training tool designed to help you master preflop strategies.

As a dedicated coach, I believe in the power of this tool so much that I provide free access to all my students, whether in one-on-one sessions or group coaching.

And now, you can experience it for yourself with a free 7-day trial.

Today I'm going to show you how to craft a winning training plan for The Preflop Dojo in the next 7 days.

So whether you're new to the app or looking to maximise its potential, this step-by-step approach will help you build confidence and consistency in your training.

Let's dive in...

Step 1: Choose a Kata

A Kata is a "...structured practice routine used to refine specific skills through repetitive exercises, focusing on perfecting technique and response."

In The Preflop Dojo, there are ready-made Katas (or training packs) for you to choose from or you can create your own.

Here you have two options...

You can either choose a spot where you know you struggle in game or choose a random spot/situation and get instant feedback at the end of your training session.

Note: Look for the Katas with the (TPLP) suffix to see the spots I recommend inside my Train & Play Like The Pros programme.

Step 2: Start The Fast 500

You need a decent sample to analyse, so start by drilling 500 hands in your chosen spot.

This is the first step in the preflop assessment within my Train & Play Like The Pros programme, if you don't have access to a database of hands to analyse.

The key thing is not to overthink your decisions, but recognise that you will naturally improve as you receive instant feedback after each hand.

You don't need to do 500 hands all in one go, you can choose the number of hands for each training session in Settings.

Note: some hands will be mixes so if you click an action and it doesn't move on to the next hand, you need to choose at least one other action too.

Step 3: Look at your results

One of my students scored 78% in this spot in his initial assessment. Looking at the scores broken down by stack size makes it easy to see what he should focus on first.

From your initial assessment, home in on the stack sizes where you're struggling.

Step 4: Create the training plan

Start off small—that's the best bit of advice I can give you when trying to build a new habit.

So let's start with just 10 minutes and the 4-2-4...

That's 4 minutes of drills then 2 minutes of review followed by 4 minutes of drilling again.

This gives you a chance to practise straight away, review your mistakes, and then another opportunity to beat your score from the last time.

Gamifying your training instantly makes it more fun and enjoyable.

The priority stack sizes for Hero in this spot are 10bb, 15bb, 20bb and 30bb so he should start with those over the next 4 days, and then focus on the stack sizes with the next lowest scores after that:

  • Monday: 10bb SB first in

  • Tuesday: 15bb SB first in

  • Wednesday: 20bb SB first in

  • Thursday: 30bb SB first in

  • Friday: 50bb SB first in

  • Saturday: 40bb SB first in

  • Sunday: 100bb SB first in

Step 5: Commit to 10 minutes every day

Commit to the plan and get your 10 minutes of training in every day, using the 4-2-4 idea above.

Consistency is key as you aim for improvement over time, focusing on challenging spots and achieving consistent high scores through short, focused sessions.

Summary

The Preflop Dojo is more than just a training tool—it’s your gateway to mastering the complexities of preflop strategy in multi-table tournaments.

By following this structured training plan, you’ll build confidence, improve decision-making, and achieve measurable progress in your preflop game in just 10 minutes per day.
